Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students in China, 2017

Shanghai Municipal Education Commission is pleased to offer Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students. Scholarship is available to pursue bachelor’s degree or above at higher educational institutions (hereinafter referred to as HEI) in Shanghai.
In order to further the development of international student education and attract more outstanding international students to study in Shanghai, the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission established the Shanghai Government Scholarships (SGS) for International Students in 2005.
The Mayor of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government , abbreviated as Mayor of Shanghai is the highest ranking executive official in Shanghai. Shanghai’s status as a global financial center and a world cosmopolitan city is one of the main factors for international students to choose it as their preferred destination for study.
Applicants should meet the language requirements of the higher education institutions. General English language requirements for English-instructed programs and Chinese-instructed programs are different.
Course Level: Scholarship is available to pursue master’s or doctoral degrees at higher educational institutions (hereinafter referred to as HEI) in Shanghai.
Study Subject: Scholarship is offered to study the subjects offered by the universities.
Scholarship Award: Full scholarship covers tuition waiver, accommodation, stipend, and comprehensive medical insurance.

NOTE: Field of Study I includes Philosophy, Economics, Legal Studies, Education, Literature, History, and Management; Field of Study II includes Science, Engineering, and Agriculture; Field of Study III includes Fine Arts and Medicine.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following guidelines:
  • Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens and be in good health.
  • Applicants for doctoral degree programs must have a master’s degree and be under the age of 40.
  • Applicants for master’s degree programs must have a bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35.
  • Applicants should have good academic performance.
  • Applicants should not be awardees of other Chinese government scholarships at the same time.
Nationality: Scholarship for available for international students.
College Admission Requirement
Entrance Requirement: Applicants must be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China, and be in good health.
Test Requirement: Not Required
English Language Requirement: General Chinese Language requirements for application to Chinese-instructed program
  • Old HSK6 (or new HSK5)or above is required for application of liberal arts, economics and management majored students.
  • Old HSK3 (or new HSK4) or above is required for application of science, engineering and medical science majored students.

  • General English language requirements for application to English-instructed programs:
  • Free English Language testing for students from English speaking countries.
  • Free English Language testing for students from countries in which English is the major teaching language on condition that the relevant proof documents were provided.
  • TOEFL 550, IELTS 5.5 or Pass university’s entrance examination.

How to Apply: Applicants shall apply directly to the HEIs in Shanghai once an academic year. Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements could apply continuously. Applications are accepted from January. For the specific application deadlines, applicants should consult the relevant HEIs.
