The Harriman Institute invites applications for two-year postdoctoral research scholar position in Ukrainian Studies, extending over academic years 2017-18 and 2018-19.
The Harriman Institute postdoctoral fellowship is available for junior scholars to spend a 2-year term in residence at Columbia University in New York. Scholars of U.S.A. can apply for this fellowship. The primary criterion in awarding this fellowship is academic excellence.
The aim of the Harriman Institute is to train the next generation of regional specialists to play leadership roles in setting the academic and scholarly agenda, making policy and challenging accepted truths about how we study our rapidly changing world.
The Harriman Institute at Columbia University is one of the world’s leading academic institutions devoted to Russian, Eurasian and East European studies.
Course Level: The fellowship is available for one two-year postdoctoral research.
Study Subject: The fellowship is awarded in the subjects of current Ukrainian life, politics, and/or international affairs.
Scholarship Award: The salary for 2017-2018 is $50,000. Medical benefits are provided and subsidised housing is available. There is a $1,000 research allowance per annum.
Scholarship can be taken in the USA
Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for fellowship:
  • For the 2017 competition is restricted to those who have received the PhD between July 31, 2014, and June 30, 2017, and do not hold a tenure-track position. All fellows must successfully defend and deposit their dissertations prior to the commencement of the fellowship.
Nationality: Applicants from U.S.A. can apply for the fellowship.

Entrance Requirement: Applicants must be junior scholars.
How to Apply: To apply, candidates should send the following materials to the Fellowship Committee via post:
  • Brief research plan outlining how the candidate’s time will be spent at the Institute (2-3 pages).
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Scholarly writing sample (one or two chapters of the dissertation, or a published article or book
  • Chapter related to the candidate’s major research theme). The writing sample must be in English.
  • 1-2 page preliminary syllabus or course concept (defining problem, method, expectations of

In addition, candidates must obtain two confidential letters of recommendation, submitted directly by each submitted directly by each recommender.
